I play Christian music much of the time at my church. Many people think I’m playing something very difficult and intricate. I do know how to make things sound good. Yes, I’m giving myself a compliment. The truth is I’m not doing anything that anyone else couldn’t learn to do with a little practice. If you learn the fundamentals of playing the piano, any song including Christian song will be nothing more than a series of chords. That’s all that music is anyway. It’s a bunch of different chords put together in different orders combined with different melodies.
Christian piano songs in particular are very easy to learn because many of the fundamental chord patterns are very basic. Of course there are always exceptions but for the most part they are simple. Then why is it that you can barely play the piano, let alone play Christian songs? Its not that you haven’t been trying to learn the songs, it’s just that you don’t understand what you are doing. You see, when I hear a song, I don’t just hear a lot of notes played in a specific order. If you just try to memorize the order of the chords you are missing the boat. This technique will leave you back at square one every time you try to learn a new song. Nothing you learn from the previous song will transfer over to the next, using this method.
You need to understand that every song is made up of patterns. I’m talking about chord patterns. Don’t try to memorize the order but memorize short patterns that the song is in. Every song has it. It would be a good idea to learn all the notes on a piano and all the basic chords. Once you know the chords, you can transfer the pattern you have learned to any key on the piano.
