To know how to read and play piano sheet music is a great asset. It is worth developing this skill as you have a nearly unlimited amount of piano sheet music titles to play.

When you try to learn piano sheet music I suggest that you take time to learn just a few notes at a time. Learn the placement of the notes on the sheet music staff and also where to play them on your piano.

Meanwhile you can learn to read the easier piano tab notation.

Piano tabs or keyboard tablature is an easy way to learn melodies and other types of piano music. We will use a common way to describe how you are to play the keys on your piano.

Sheet music notation shows the notes to play but not how to play them on your instrument. Tablature on the other hand shows the keys to play on your piano.

To read the piano tabs you have to learn the note names of the white keys on your piano. First we will take a look at the note c at the middle of the piano keyboard. It is called middle c or sometimes c4.

The black keys on the keyboard are organized in groups consisting of two or three black keys. Middle c is immediately to the left of two black keys at the middle of the keyboard.

As we mentioned before middle c is sometimes called c4 as it is in the fourth octave of a piano or a grand. Octave means eight and you have played eight notes if you start with c and play the white keys until you come to the next c.

The following notes to the right of c is d e f g a b and then you have the next c. This c is subsequently called c5 as it is in the fifth octave of a piano. On a smaller type of keyboard with fewer keys you will still use c4 to show middle c.

The c note to the left of middle c is called c3. All notes to the left of two black keys are c notes in different octaves.

The easy piano tabs we will use to play Fur Elise has the following rules:

1. The white keys are indicated with lowercase letters. An example: c d e f g a b

2. The black keys are shown by uppercase letters. For example, A D-major chord is written d F a. The uppercase letter F shows that the note is the black key to the right of f.

3. The octave to play is showed with a number after the letter. The note c4 means, play middle c. The following notes will not have a number until it is time to change octave. Here is a C-major arpeggio: c4 e g c5

It is time to play the first notes of Fur Elise. It is written as an easy melody for your right hand:

I suggest that you memorize the melody one line at a time. Now we will come to a new part of the melody. If it had been a pop song it would be called the bridge:

Time? Who has time? Who has the time needed to learn to play the piano? Doesn’t that take hours and hours a week and daily practice to get good enough to play songs on the piano?

Hallelujah is a song written by Leonard Cohen which has become well known. The song has been played in Shrek and was released on the first single album of the x-factor winner Alexandra Burke. In next lines I’ll explain how to play a very simple version of this song which still sounds fabulous.

The chords you will need to play with your left hand are C major, A minor, F major, G major and E minor. One of the ways to make it sound nice is simply to individually play the tones of the chord. For example you should play C major like C, E, G, C (an octave higher), G, E and back to C. At the beginning the lyrics go like I heard there was a secret chord, if you sing along you should press C at the moment you start saying the word heard at the word there you already play G and for “was” C (an octave higher). But instead of returning back to C return to A and begin playing A minor. You can play it as A, C, E, A but playing it A, E, A, C will sound much better. A minor goes with lyrics “a secret chord” and then you go back to C chord for “that David played and it pleased the lord” and again A minor for the following: “and it pleased the lord”.

After this comes a bit different sequence “but you don’t really” where you should play F (F, A, C, F) and “care for music” where G (G, B, D, G) should be played. You should be back to C chord when you play ” do you” you continue playing it when singing “it goes like this”. And now before the hallelujah part you go down to F but only play it as F, A, C (”the forth”), when you sing “the fifth” you already play G (G, B, D), up to A minor (which you play as usual) for “the minor fall and the”, down to F for “major lift, the” and up to G for “the baffled king com-”, and now for the first time down to E (E, G, B, E, B, G, E) minor “-posing”, and up to A-minor for hallelujah. Now comes a little pause before the main part and then the chords you play throughout the whole refrain are F, A minor, F, C, G and back to C.

With your right hand you play the melody. You start on G (”I”) and continue pressing the keys octave higher on G (”Heard there was a”) and A for “secret wish”. Same goes for “that David played and it pleased the Lord” and then you stay on A playing “but you don’t really” go back to G for “for mu-” and to F”-sic” and up again “do you”. There are many different ways to continue so I’ll show you just the way I play, but try to play it by ear you will learn it a lot faster. G(octave lower), G G G A A B B G C C C C C C D D C D D D D D E E D C. And for the refrain you go back down to E(ha), G(le), A A(lu-jah)… And repeat it.

Remember that this is just my suggestion on how to play Hallelujah the important thing is that you know the chords for your left hand which you can play the way I described it or in any other way, once you master your left hand you can add the melody playing by ear.

A learner using this method has to develop key sense to be successful in their piano playing venture. For many learners, especially those who are visual in their learning method, this method can again be daunting and discouraging.

The third method or pentatonic method for learning to play the piano involves what is known as the pentatonic scale or the five-note scale. These five notes just happen to correspond to the five black keys on the piano keyboard. Many melodies use only these five keys. In effect, what this pentatonic method of learning to play the piano has done is cut out the necessity of learning note reading and has increased the probability of learning a piece by-ear.

Why? Because pieces using only five notes are a lot easier to discover or learn than pieces using the possibility of any of the existing twelve notes of the chromatic scale. In addition, without the necessity of learning to read notes, the learner can start working immediately on developing coordination and technique. Thirdly, with only five notes involved, a learner can easily create accompaniment patterns to melodies, which allows a person to play real music, real songs, and real pieces in a very short time.

The success rate for those starting with this method is very high because a learner can concentrate on learning how to move their fingers and use two hands at once at the piano instead of having to wade through the many layers of thought processes involved in note reading and/or by-ear playing.

The pentatonic method also meets the needs of all learners - tactile, aural, and visual. Those who learn tactilely are successful because by moving their fingers on the keys freely they quickly discover the sounds needed to create melodies. The aural learner is at home with this method because they are given the opportunity to recreate the sounds they hear without being frustrated by an overload of visual materials. The visual learner, though, also easily learns with this method because the black keys create an explicit visual reference point for each melody and accompaniment created.

Which method would I suggest for an adult wanting to learn to play the piano? The pentatonic method.

So, you’ve been dying to play the piano. But you don’t want to spend years learning how to read music. Of course you don’t! And you won’t have to IF you learn a chord-based approach to playing the piano.

Here’s a method I use to get my students playing piano in a flash. First, you need to learn a few chords. But not just any chord type. No. The chord type I have my students learn first is something called the open position chord. And with it, you’ll be able to create your own unique music right away!

The open position chord is exactly what its name implies. It’s a chord structure that covers more than 2 octaves of the keyboard AND uses both hands right away. If you don’t know what an octave is, not to worry. Suffice it to say that 2 octaves are over 16 white keys. It’s a handful to play this chord structure but once you master it, you’ll be well on your way to unlocking the secrets of keyboard harmony.

So, how exactly can we use this chord to create music with? Easy. Take a look at my free piano lesson “Reflections in Water” (available by clicking below.) The first thing you notice about this lesson is that it’s unusual. It’s not your typical piano lesson by far. In fact, you might even think it looks like an art lesson - and you’d be right! I specifically designed the lessons using a step by step approach that many art instruction books use.

The lesson contains four open position piano chords with fingering diagrams. The beautiful thing about this chord structure is that once you master it, you can easily use it to play ALL the chords in all 12 keys. The first thing I ask you to do is play the chords - first all tones together (solid chords) and then with the tones broken up (broken chords.)

Once you have this chord structure under your fingers and you’ve developed a muscle memory for it, the rest is easy!

In the lesson “Reflections in Water,” we use this chord structure to improvise a few minutes of music. The chord progression is laid out for you and all you have to do is simply follow along. I also provide audio examples so you can hear how I used the same chords to improvise with.

I play Christian music much of the time at my church. Many people think I’m playing something very difficult and intricate. I do know how to make things sound good. Yes, I’m giving myself a compliment. The truth is I’m not doing anything that anyone else couldn’t learn to do with a little practice. If you learn the fundamentals of playing the piano, any song including Christian song will be nothing more than a series of chords. That’s all that music is anyway. It’s a bunch of different chords put together in different orders combined with different melodies.

Christian piano songs in particular are very easy to learn because many of the fundamental chord patterns are very basic. Of course there are always exceptions but for the most part they are simple. Then why is it that you can barely play the piano, let alone play Christian songs? Its not that you haven’t been trying to learn the songs, it’s just that you don’t understand what you are doing. You see, when I hear a song, I don’t just hear a lot of notes played in a specific order. If you just try to memorize the order of the chords you are missing the boat. This technique will leave you back at square one every time you try to learn a new song. Nothing you learn from the previous song will transfer over to the next, using this method.

You need to understand that every song is made up of patterns. I’m talking about chord patterns. Don’t try to memorize the order but memorize short patterns that the song is in. Every song has it. It would be a good idea to learn all the notes on a piano and all the basic chords. Once you know the chords, you can transfer the pattern you have learned to any key on the piano.
